The Emily Bishop Memorial Fountain
At the intersection of Virginia Avenue and West Stephen Street stands a monument to Emily Bishop and family members. This special monument used to be located at the center of historic Martinsburg and provided water to the horses and any other animal that might have needed a drink. Here it stands almost forgotten except by those passing by it on one of these two streets and even then the story isn't completely told.
The fountains near the base of the monument are visible but were disabled when it was moved to this location under order of city officials. Since travel by horse was no longer a viable way to get around the need for the fountain was no more.
More about Emily Bishop and the history of this monument will be added here soon.
